Interceptor Treatment

This treatment is done prophylactically; so whether the acros are showing signs of red/white/gray bugs or not; they will go through this process. One large pill/tablet of Interceptor contains 23mg of milbemycin oxime. If using Interceptor Spectrum/Plus, it also contains 228mg of praziquantel. If using standard pills/tablets without flavoring additives, your parameters should be unaffected. If using flavored chews, it may bottom out your nutrients so you must keep an eye on phosphates/nitrates to avoid crashing. I believe flavoring agents of the chews act as a giant dose of carbon to the system, but if you test PO4/NO3 daily and adjust accordly; the outcome is controllable. Remove all shrimps and crabs during treatment as interceptor will kill most of them; snails seem to be unaffected.

Standard dosage is 23mg milbemycin oxime per 400 gallons of water; I regularly use 6-8x the dosage with great results (~1.5-2 large tablets per 100 gallons of water)

  1. Treat during lights out as pests seem to be more active at night, turn off UV lights, turn off protein skimmer, and remove all mechanical filtration. Filter socks are okay, fleece rollers should be removed.
  2. Heat 500ml of rodi water in glass measuring cup, I usually heat up to ~80 degrees C. Drop interceptor tablets into water and stir occasionally.
  3. After ~20 minutes, the tablets should be completely dissolved. Mix into 1 gallon of water from the display and slowly pour into return chamber.
  4. After a minimum of 12 hours, perform 10-15% water change and bring all filtration back online including protein skimmer and UV light; I generally do this at the 18 hour mark.
  5. About an hour later, test phosphate and nitrate levels and adjust accordingly.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 after one week, and again a week after that for a total of 3 treatments.
